There’s something about autumn that naturally invites us to shift.
The air becomes cooler, the days become shorter, and we begin reaching for warmer foods, softer layers, and more grounding rituals. Our skin experiences this seasonal transition, too.
After months of sun exposure, heat, humidity, sweat, swimming, travel, and more time outdoors, skin can enter fall feeling depleted. You may notice dehydration, uneven pigmentation, congestion, sensitivity, or simply that your complexion doesn't have quite the same vitality.
Then the environment begins changing again. Humidity drops, cooler winds arrive, and eventually the indoor heat comes on.
This is why I think of autumn as a reset season for the skin.
Not a time to aggressively correct everything summer left behind, but an opportunity to restore what has been depleted, strengthen the skin barrier, and prepare it for the colder months ahead.
Your Skin Changes with the Seasons
Your skin isn't static.
Its hydration, oil production, barrier function and sensitivity can fluctuate throughout the year, and your skincare should be able to evolve with it.
During summer, heat, perspiration, increased sun exposure and time outdoors can contribute to congestion, dehydration and more visible pigmentation.
Then fall arrives.
As humidity decreases and temperatures fluctuate, the lightweight routine that felt perfect in July may suddenly leave your skin feeling tight or undernourished.
You may begin noticing flaky areas, increased sensitivity, dullness or fine dehydration lines.
Rather than waiting until winter dryness is already established, fall is the perfect time to begin supporting the skin barrier.
Replenish What Summer Took Away
When skin feels dehydrated, our first instinct is usually to add more moisture.
But healthy skin needs more than water.
The outermost layers of our skin contain important lipids that help maintain the integrity of the skin barrier and reduce water loss. When that protective barrier isn't functioning optimally, skin can have a harder time holding onto moisture even when you're applying hydrating products.
This is why my approach in autumn focuses on both hydration and lipid replenishment.
Sometimes the most beneficial thing we can do isn't add another active ingredient.
It's to give the skin what it needs to function well on its own.
And that is an important part of skin longevity.
Address Summer Pigmentation - Gently
September and October are often when we begin noticing what summer left behind.
Freckles may appear darker. Uneven pigmentation becomes more visible. The complexion may look duller or less even.
And this is often when people start reaching for stronger acids, scrubs and peels.
But more isn't always better.
I prefer to support healthy cellular renewal while protecting the integrity of the skin barrier. Depending on your skin, autumn treatments may incorporate gentle exfoliation, enzymes, antioxidants, LED light therapy, nourishing ingredients and carefully selected home care.
Your skin doesn't need to be punished for enjoying summer. It needs to be supported.
Strengthen Your Barrier Before Winter
Think of autumn as preparation.
Once winter arrives, cold outdoor air combined with dry indoor heat can create an entirely different environment for your skin.
If your barrier is already depleted going into winter, you may experience more dryness, tightness, redness, flaking and sensitivity.
Fall gives us an opportunity to support the skin before those conditions become more intense.
That might mean transitioning to a gentler cleanser, adding more lipid-rich skincare, reducing unnecessary exfoliation or simply paying closer attention to what your skin is telling you.
You don't need to follow the exact same skincare routine twelve months of the year.
My Fall Skincare Recommendations
I don't believe a new season requires replacing everything on your bathroom shelf.
Often, a few thoughtful adjustments are enough.
In fall, I tend to reach for formulas that respect the skin barrier, replenish what is missing and help the skin retain moisture rather than overwhelming it with unnecessary actives.
Dermaviduals DMS Cleansing Milk
Cleansing is one of the first things I reassess when someone's skin begins feeling dry, tight or reactive.
Dermaviduals DMS Cleansing Milk is one of my favorite gentle cleansers for maintaining the skin's natural protective barrier without leaving it feeling stripped. Its mild, skin-friendly cleansing base and lipid-rich formulation help cleanse while preserving the skin’s natural oils especially valuable in fall, when lower humidity and cooler temperatures can make the skin more prone to dryness and sensitivity.
Dermaviduals High Classic Plus
As temperatures drop, some skins need more lipids and nourishment.
High Classic Plus is one of the richer Dermaviduals creams I reach for when the skin needs additional barrier support, particularly during the transition into colder weather. Its nourishing lipid composition gives dry, depleted skin the extra richness it begins to crave in fall, leaving it feeling softer, more supple and comfortably protected as the weather changes.
Dermaviduals Lotion N
Hydration becomes especially important as humidity levels begin to drop. Dermaviduals Lotion N is a lightweight, hydrating toner-lotion designed to support skin that feels dehydrated, tight or increasingly sensitive with seasonal changes and prone to acne.
Think of Lotion N as the hydrating step, followed by your moisturizer or lipid-rich products to help keep that hydration where your skin needs it.
Dermaviduals Oleogel S
When the weather becomes colder, some skin needs more than a traditional moisturizer. Dermaviduals Oleogel S is a water-free, lipid-rich formula that creates a protective, nourishing layer for skin that feels especially dry, fragile or depleted.
I particularly like it during fall and winter when cold air, wind and indoor heating can leave the skin feeling tight and uncomfortable. A small amount can be used on its own or incorporated into a customized routine to give dry areas additional protection and help the skin feel softer and more comfortable.
Because it is concentrated and anhydrous, a little goes a long way, making it a beautiful seasonal addition when your regular moisturizer suddenly doesn't feel like quite enough.

Sky & Sol Everything Cream
For those looking for a simple, rich moisturizer outside of the Dermaviduals line, Sky & Sol Everything Cream is another option I like for the cooler months. What I appreciate about this formula is its simplicity. It is made with just a handful of thoughtfully selected ingredients, including grass-fed tallow and bovine colostrum, rather than a long list of unnecessary additives. Tallow provides nourishing fatty acids and lipids, while colostrum contributes naturally occurring proteins and other bioactive components.
And although tallow sounds like it would make for a very heavy cream, Everything Cream has a surprisingly light, silky texture that melts beautifully into the skin without feeling overly thick or greasy.
This makes it a lovely option when skin begins craving more nourishment and comfort in the colder months, especially if you prefer a more minimal approach to skincare.
Sky & Sol Eye Revive Cream
The delicate eye area deserves a little extra attention as the weather turns colder. The skin around the eyes is thinner than much of the rest of the face and has fewer oil glands, which can make dryness, dehydration and fine lines more noticeable when humidity drops and indoor heating comes on.
Sky & Sol Eye Revive Cream is a nourishing option I like for giving this delicate area a little more comfort and moisture without relying on an overly complicated routine. Its formula includes grass-fed tallow and colostrum, along with other thoughtfully selected ingredients designed specifically for the eye area.
I especially like incorporating a dedicated eye cream in fall and winter when the skin around the eyes begins feeling tight, dry or crepey. Apply a small amount gently around the orbital area, there's no need to tug, rub or use too much product.
Don't Forget About Movement
Skin health isn't only about what we put on the surface.
This is one reason facial massage plays such an important role in my treatments.
Gua sha, facial cupping, sculpting massage, fascia work and gentle lymphatic techniques can support circulation and fluid movement while helping release areas of tension throughout the face, jaw, neck and scalp.
And there's another part of skin health that I believe deserves more attention:
your nervous system.
Fall can quickly become a season filled with school schedules, work, activities, holidays and endless to-do lists.
Your facial doesn't have to be another appointment where you're trying to fix something about yourself.
It can be a place where your skin is cared for while your entire system has an opportunity to soften and rest.
That, too, is part of holistic skin health.
Nourish Your Skin from Within: Autumn as a Season of Warmth
Our seasonal rituals don't have to stop with skincare.
In both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, colder seasons are traditionally viewed as a time to favor warmth, nourishment and grounding, something I personally love incorporating into my own autumn routine.
As the temperature drops, consider swapping icy drinks for warm or room-temperature water and sipping warm herbal infusions throughout the day. Herbs and spices such as ginger, cinnamon, fennel or tulsi can make beautiful seasonal teas, although the best herbs for you will depend on your individual constitution, medications and health needs.
Breakfast can become a ritual, too.
Instead of starting a cold morning with something straight from the refrigerator, try a bowl of warm porridge topped with gently stewed apples or pears and cinnamon. Add a little ghee or coconut oil for richness and satiety.
It's simple, comforting and grounding and a beautiful way to begin a chilly morning.
When the world around us becomes colder, our rituals can become warmer.
Warm meals. Herbal infusions. Seasonal fruits and vegetables. Nourishing fats. A slower morning when possible.
Rather than thinking about skin as something separate from the rest of you, think about autumn as an opportunity to support your whole system - your skin, digestion, energy, sleep and nervous system.
Because holistic skincare isn't simply about what you put on your skin.
It's also about the daily rituals that support how you feel within it.
Your Autumn Routine Doesn't Need to Be Complicated
Before buying five new products, start by listening to your skin.
Is your cleanser suddenly leaving your face feeling tight?
Does your moisturizer no longer feel like enough?
Are you exfoliating because your skin looks dull when what it actually needs is more hydration and barrier support?
Seasonal skincare doesn't necessarily mean more skincare.
Sometimes it means doing less, more intentionally.
Cleanse gently. Replenish hydration and lipids. Pull back on excessive exfoliation when your skin feels sensitive. Add richer barrier support when your skin asks for it.
And create small rituals - whether that's a few minutes of gua sha, facial massage, an evening skincare ritual or simply slowing down enough to notice what your skin needs.
Skin Longevity Isn't About Stopping Time
Skin longevity isn't about trying to stop aging.
It's about supporting the health, resilience and function of your skin so it can continue doing its job beautifully through the years ahead.
Autumn gives us a wonderful reminder of that.
Nature doesn't resist changing seasons.
It adapts.
Our skin deserves the same grace.
Restore what summer depleted. Strengthen the barrier. Support circulation. Nourish the skin. Create space for rest.
Your skin doesn't need to be forced into renewal.
Sometimes, it simply needs the right environment to do what it already knows how to do.
